Nursery Rhymes

Journal Entry: Sat Nov 24, 2012, 10:41 PM
Okay, is it just me, or are nursery rhymes really, really morbid and wrong? Remember "Rock-a-bye Baby?"

"Hush-a-by baby
On the tree top,
When the wind blows
The cradle will rock."

Aw, it starts out all innocent and lovely, aye? Then:

"When the bough breaks,
The cradle will fall,
And down will fall baby
Cradle and all."

WHAT THE HOLY MARACROONERY.

You sing a baby that song. You put the baby in a lovely scene where he's rocking gently on a treetop to the sweet lulling breeze. And then the freaking bough breaks and the baby plummets to his flipping death.

And what about "London Bridge is Falling Down"?

Holy crap, you DO NOT want the London bridge to be falling down.

Then there's "Jack and Jill"

""Jack and Jill
Went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down
And broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after"

He broke his crown. His head. And there was this bit about him having his head wrapped up and Jill smirking and their mother beating her up because of that smirk.

And "Goosey Goosey Gander"

"Goosey goosey gander where shall I wander,
Upstairs, downstairs and in my lady's chamber
There I met an old man who wouldn't say his prayers,
I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs."

What is wrong with the people who wrote all the nursery rhymes? They are so morbid.

  • Listening to: come on down
  • Watching: doctor whoooooooooo FLESH AND STONE

=A=;; I remember in a high school history class....we saw an example of an old alphabet book that had stuff like D is for Death... yeah, those people sure were morbid, but I guess without modern technology, mortality rates were high so they were desensitized...

They were desperate for rhymes I suppose. Catchy but highly inappropriate.

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after

Up Jack got and home did trot,
As fast as he could caper;
And went to bed and bound his head
With vinegar and brown paper

When Jill came in how she did grin
To see Jack's paper plaster;
Mother vexed did whip her next
For causing Jack's disaster.

Nursery rhymes are creepy and morbid. xD

Yep, currently watching the 5th season with Matt Smith as the Doctor. I wanted to save the 10th Doctor for later because I like him best. c:

there are actually many sites littered all around. Google is your best friend

I was actually talking about this a few weeks ago with a couple of friends! Ring Around the Rosy is about the black plague, Humpty Dumpty is about someone who falls and BREAKS THEMSELVES OPEN, and The Woman who Lived in a Shoe is about a women with so many children she can't feed them and beats them for no good reason.

This is actually very interesting to me since I don't really... get to hear any of those! You know, first off for coming from a French region. Second, my mother would read me story books, so even the French ones I don't know.

Now you make me want to find a whole bunch more, I really... like them???? God I'm such a creeper lol
